Chapter Twelve

The Price of a Cup of Coffee

“SHIT.” CANDACE CRUMPLED the tersely worded memo and threw it into the trash basket.

Due to budgetary constraints, her request was denied. Continental Assurance did not plan to hire an administrative assistant to work with the Corporate Event Planner. In addition to that, she needed to remember the Event Planner’s annual review and progress report was due one month from today.

Candace glared at the phone and then punched a few of its keys.

“Marilyn? It’s Candace.”

“Hey, Candace. How are you?”

“Fine, and you?”

“Just fine, thanks.”

“Good. Listen, are any of your summer interns floating around without enough assignments to keep them busy?”

“I do have one young man without a steady assignment. I’ve been using him as a per diem sub wherever we’re short-staffed.”

“Great. Could you send him up to my office?”

“Only for today?”

“Every day for the foreseeable future, if you can spare him.”

“Sure. I think I can do that. It’ll be great to have every intern attached to a department.”

“Terrific. Thanks. Talk to you soon.”

Candace hung up the phone.

“Budgetary constraints, huh? I’ve hired my own damn administrative assistant.”

She donated three additional seconds to feeling smug before she picked up a pair of scissors and stepped toward an unopened box perched on a table at the far end of her office. She spread the scissors’ blades and used the broader one to slash an incision through the box’s binding. She tugged on the cardboard, reached inside and extracted the box’s list of contents. “Okay, Mr. Intern. This will be your first job.”

Four rapid fire knocks on the office door answered Candace.

“Come in.”

Candace watched the knob turn quickly. The door opened and a mustachioed young man entered the room.

“Ms. Dickerson?” he asked.

“Yes, that’s right.”

The young man stepped forward into Candace’s work space. His outstretched hand assumed the lead and he smiled confidently as he introduced himself.

“I’m Ted Williamson, the intern. Nice to meet you.”

“I’m the Corporate Event Planner, Candace Dickerson.”

“I’m glad I’ve finally gotten a permanent assignment. It’s rough bouncing from one office to another.”

Candace withheld her smile. She pumped the young man’s hand twice and then pulled her hand away from his.

“Don’t get too comfortable, Mr. Williamson. This assignment will last as long as I have tasks for you to do. It’s not permanent by any means.”

“Oh, sure,” Ted said. “I understand.” He gazed at his surroundings. “You have a nice office here.”

“Thanks. Right now it’s filled with work that needs to be done.”

“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves. Just point me in the right direction.”

Candace ignored his small talk.

“Do you see that box?” She pointed to the newly opened package. “It’s filled with thank you letters that have to be mailed to people who attended our last big charity event. There’s a printer over there.” She gestured to the business equipment. “You’re going to count out two hundred sixty of those letters and load them into the printer. I’ll send you the data you need and, one by one, the printer will affix each guest’s name and address to a letter.
